What’s On at the Heeley Festival 2010
The spotlight will be shining brightly on local residents on June 19th as Heeley Festival hosts its first ‘Heeleys Got Talent’ event.
Pupils from the local schools will be taking part on the day plus the winners and runners up from competitions held previously at pubs in the area.
A panel of local judges will pick the winner of the ‘Heeleys Got Talent’ Trophy, which is being sponsored by Ponsfords.
The talent competition is part of a busy Festival programme that is kicked off at Heeley Green by the Festival parade. At 11.45 a.m, a procession of dancers, musicians, local school pupils and possibly a gorilla and giant banana (!) will be led from Heeley Green shops to Heeley Millennium Park by the beat of Bongo Bert’s drum.
The Millennium Park will be hosting the usual variety of craft traders, community stalls and food outlets. There will be entertainment throughout the day brought to you by Big Al’s Funhouse with performances from Michelle Farrar’s Stepping Out Dance Troupe, Carfield Community Choir, Boomshanka Belly Dancers, Jayne’s Dancers and Phoenix Falconry.
Anns Grove Primary School have organised a car boot sale on the school car park and there will be more stalls on the school playground. Strawberry cream teas will be served at Heeley Parish Church who are also hosting a Heeley History Group display. Heeley City Farm will be selling plants at the garden centre and food from the relaunched Farm Kitchen.
There will be lots of free activities for young people at this years Festival. ReCycle Rides ‘Last Saturday Club’ will be attending with the Not Shore BMX obstacle course, there will be activities on the Millennium Park Boulder and Activity Sheffield will be bringing the climbing wall and an inflatable football pitch. For young people wanting to express their creative side, Museum Sheffield will be running art sessions throughout the day as part of the Belonging project and there will be a storytelling area on the park. There will also be drumming workshops with Bongo Bert and street dancing classes by Musical Works.
The Festival continues into the evening with a live music stage running until 8pm. A packed line-up includes bands from Newfield School and Angelus Diablo , a local band that are regular performers at West Street Live in Sheffield City Centre but who are performing at Heeley Festival for the first time.
So come along on the 19th June and celebrate all that’s good about Heeley, If we get the sunshine and the same turnout as last years Festival then it will be another brilliant day.
Festival Planters!
Also at this year’s Heeley Festival, Heeley Development Trust will be taking orders for handmade garden furniture. On show will be a variety of items produced by the boys who look after the Millennium Park. 6 seater picnic benches (responsibly sourced & treated wood) are a ‘must-have’ for the warm summer nights! Also available will be garden-planters, made from recycled bike parts and reclaimed wood. Come to the Heeley Development Trust stall on Festival day or call into the Trust office at Ash Tree Yard 62-68 Thirlwell Road, Heeley anytime after.
