Heeley Festival 2010

MUSIC, dance, face painting and fun took centre stage as three Sheffield suburbs staged family festivals at the weekend.

Walkley Festival rocked to the sounds of soul, blues and St Mary’s school brass band, with events in and around Ruskin Park.

Walkley Feral Writers group offered locals the chance to write about how Walkley might appear to alien invaders, while organisation Art in the Park let children show off their creative side, with lantern-making and circus skills.

For adults, the programme included locally-brewed beers, guided walks, and an arts and crafts exhibition at St Mary’s Community Hall.

Over at the Heeley Festival girls from the Stepping Out dance group strutted their stuff in the arena in Millennium Park for a show of American-style cheerleading.

The performance was followed by belly dancing, music from Newfield Soul Band, and a Heeley’s Got Talent contest, held to find the area’s most talented youngster.

There was falconry, storytelling, drumming and BMX biking, a history exhibition and strawberry cream teas. Anns Grove School Parent Teacher Association held a car boot sale, while Heeley City Farm hosted a display by Green Top Circus and children’s activities.

And at Woodthorpe Community Festival – staged in memory Chris Thew, the headteacher of Woodthorpe Primary School who died suddenly last month – kids tried out a colourful new look with face paints, or mucked about on stilts.

Organiser Ryszard Szumski said: “The festival was held to bring the community together and have a great time – but also as a day of tribute to Chris Thew. Proceeds will go to a memorial fund.”
