Well no, rain won’t ruin the day because Meersbrook Bowling & Social Club are opening their doors to Big Lunch-ers for the afternoon of Sunday 18th July. If it’s pouring down, the street-party will de-camp to the Club en masse (some outdoor activities may be cancelled). Otherwise, party-goers are invited to pop in either during or after the street-party for a drink and to check out the Club’s facilities.
According to the Pevsner Architectural Guide for Sheffield, Meersbrook Bowling Club was:
built in 1875 in a heavy Italianate style, quite unlike anything else in the city… [It has] round headed windows, all the eaves with decorative barge-boards and a porch with iron columns and decorative brackets like those of a railway station awning. [Pevsner Architectural Guides: Sheffield by Ruth Harman and John Minnis, 2004, pp 240-241]
Didn’t know it was there? Maybe not, because this historic, architectural curiosity is hidden behind a high stone wall halfway up Shirebrook Road and has only recently opened up to social as well as the traditional bowls-playing membership. Big Lunch day will be a good opportunity to check out the Club – ask for membership details behind the bar, or just enjoy a drink.
Back to the street-party now and, fingers-crossed for a sunny day, this is what you’ll need to bring:
- Food & drink to share
- A plate, cup and cutlery for yourself
- A folding or portable chair
If you want to join in with any of the entertainment, you may also want to bring:
- Your ‘party-piece’ to be performed for the Talent Show
- CDs or musical instruments to plug into the sound system
- Sheet music to play on the street-piano
If you want to enter a competition, bring your entry:
- Best cake
- Best table flowers
- Most unusual or rude vegetable
- Best ‘Big Albert’ – use your imagination
The final planning meeting takes place in Meersbrook Bowling & Social Club on Thursday 15th July at 7.00pm. Come if you can, or call Joan (249 8613) or Izzy (255 7855).
