New Volunteering Opportunities in Heeley and Abbeydale areas

We are looking for Volunteer Learning Advocates for Heeley and Abbeydale as part of the Sheffield Informal Learning Advocates Project (SILA- Progress Together)  to work for at least one day per week, starting as soon as possible

Purpose of project

To help people access local learning opportunities especially:

  • Those with no, or low, educational qualifications
  • Older people experiencing social isolation, especially elders in BME communities
  • People with ESOL needs
  • Unemployed people
  • Households on out of work benefits with children

Specific tasks

  1. To promote adult community learning and its benefits throughout the area
  2. To recruit new learners to local courses and the  Heeley Online Centre
  3. To visit groups and talk to potential learners within the area to find out what courses they may want to do
  4. To help support engagement activities like the new conversation club, cycling and keep fit activities
  5. To help people overcome any barriers to learning
  6. To help with events and publicity

You need to be outward going, enjoy talking and listening to a wide range of people and be enthusiastic about the benefits of lifelong learning.  You also need to have a reasonable standard of written  English as you will be required to keep records and write short reports each week.

Some of the work will involve helping people to become more confident computer users, so a working knowledge of computers is essential.

A clean Driving Licence and use of a car would be helpful- but not essential.

 What we offer you:

  • Reasonable travel, childcare and lunch expenses
  • useful work- experience for anyone wanting to work in the community or with computers
  • support and training as required
  • a busy, friendly working environment
