Heeley residents looking for work can now get free help learning essential computer skills at their local Jobcentre, thanks to a new partnership between Sheffield Jobcentres and Heeley Development Trust.

Heeley Development Trust staff are delivering weekly IT engagement sessions at Bailey Court and Hillsborough Job Centre where jobseekers can start learning basic computer skills, brush up on email, and learn how to search for jobs and send CVs and applications to employers.

A pilot for the project has already provided advice and guidance to over 200 jobseekers since February, and additional funding means that the Trust will be able to help even more people.

According to project leader James Richardson, “Sheffield Jobcentres knew about our reputation for helping people across Sheffield get online for the first time, and wanted us to develop training that helps people develop the IT skills they need to find the right job in today’s competitive labour market. With so many employers only advertising jobs online, and insisting that CVs and applications be sent by email instead of by post, it’s now very difficult to find the best jobs unless you know how to use the internet. It can seem daunting, but so many of the learners at these sessions are surprised at how quickly they get the hang of it.”

Sessions run on Tuesdays at Bailey Court Jobcentre in the city centre and Thursdays at Hillsborough Job centre. It doesn’t matter if you sign on there or at another Jobcentre –your advisor will be able to book a place.
