The Heeley Development Trust (HDT) will be turning the Winter Gardens into a digital media training centre between 10am – 2pm on Friday, May 24th.

The ‘Get a Bigger Life Online’ event has been developed by the HDT in partnership with Sheffield City Council and the University of Sheffield to celebrate Adult Learners Week and address issues of digital exclusion.

“It’ll be informative and a lot of a fun” explained Sheffield Community Online Learning Manager Maxine Bowler.  “We’ll be pulling together an iPad band, inviting members of the public to create a Flickr account with photographs of the gardens and baking a cake by following online instructions.

Staff from John Lewis will be demonstrating the latest gadgets and we’ll be screening a documentary about local people who’ve benefited from community IT provision, and what becoming digitally included has done for them.

With shopping, banking and communicating increasingly virtual, more and more public services going online and the recent launch of Universal Jobmatch it’s more imperative than ever for people to get online.

Really Green IT and Aspire Sheffield will be discussing computer recycling and we’ll be interviewing members of the public to document contemporary attitudes towards our daily digital interaction.

It’s an event for everybody, and everything is free”.
