A regular litter pick has been set up in Heeley and during the first few months an increasing number of volunteers have cleared bags of litter from Gleadless Road, outside the Heeley Green shops and all the way down to the Anns Grove School.
“The idea was inspired by the success of a similar monthly event in Sharrow and the community in Heeley has been very supportive”, said Susan Tavernor, a volunteer for the group. “People stop us and ask us what we’re doing and everyone has been very positive. We use grabbers, bags and gloves provided by AMEY, and we’ve applied to the local MP for some funding for more equipment”.
“I’m contacting local schools to try and get them on board, and we’d like to get local businesses taking more responsibility for the litter outside their own premises. We’ll be meeting outside the Co-op on Heeley Green on the first Saturday of the month, come rain or shine”.
The next event will takes place at 10 a.m on Saturday 7th May.
