Big Albert Lunch & Street Party in Heeley 18th July 2010

Preparations to join in national Big Lunch celebrations on 18th July with a street party on Albert Road are gathering pace. Never having been to a street party in my life, I’m kind of excited and will definitely be there with my plate of sandwiches (egg-mayo with a hint of sweet chilli sauce being my signature sarnie). If Albert Road is in your neck of the woods, there are now people you can contact to help out with different aspects of the afternoon’s fun. It strikes me that this will work best if lots of people do a little bit rather than a few people do a lot. So whether you have time to help prepare beforehand, or only on the day, get in touch:

Entertainment

Shared Lunch

Everyone is asked to bring a sweet or savoury dish to share (or for non-cooks crisps, dips, fruit etc will go down well). Bring your own plate, mug, cutlery and chair too. Offers of portable or folding tables welcome. To help organising the food side of things, call Bardy (258 7274).

Games

Local kids have come up with lots of ideas: a sports area (including swing-ball, volleyball and badminton); races (including ‘Wet Welly Race’ and more); and a ‘soft’ play area for small children. To help, adults call Jo or Judy (281 7851), kids call Niamh (0750 231 8381)

Competitions

Best cake; Best table flowers; Most unusual or rude vegetable; Best ‘Big Albert’ (make what, or who, you like out of that!); and mystery prizes for both the individual and family with the highest score in the games. Judges will be needed. To help, call Joan (429 8613).

Street Decorations

There will be a bunting and decoration making evening at 212 Shirebrook Road at 7.30pm on Thursday 8th July. Just turn up. Bring materials if you can (especially any used World Cup paraphernalia), or just willing hands and your imagination.

Next Planning Meeting

Thursday 1st July at 7.00pm at Meersbrook Bowling & Social Club on Shirebrook Road. Young people welcome. There’ll be another meeting, same time, same place on Thursday 15th July.
