These old photographs are from the Picture Sheffield website and show ‘Victory in Europe” (VE) Day street parties in Heeley in May 1945. Despite the fact that food rationing was set to continue, people still wanted to party. The scene depicting bunting in the street is a view down Oak Street (before all the terraced houses were demolished). The second photo shows a little girl combining her birthday party with the VE Day celebrations on Upper Valley Road – apparently her cake is iced in red, white and blue.
Our very own Big Lunch 2010 street party on Albert Road is set for Sunday 18th July from 12.00-4.30pm. If this coincides with your birthday, why not sign up to judge the ‘Best Cake’ competition – that way you’re sure to get lots of lovely home-baked cake.
